Assisting Presiding Officers
Advising a presiding officer during the course of a meeting is the standard role of a parliamentarian.  This role, however, begins long before the meeting is called to order, and often ends well after the meeting has adjourned.

Weeks in advance of the business meeting, a professional parliamentarian will write a script from the agenda to help guide the presiding officer during the course of the meeting. (If necessary, the parliamentarian assists in formulating an efficient agenda!)

During the business meeting, the parliamentarian carefully observes the proceedings, advising the presiding officer on procedural matters as often (but only as often!) as necessary.

After the meeting, organizations often ask the parliamentarian to assist the secretary in drafting concise, accurate minutes.
