Update on my Dual Boot Ubuntu Machine

As an update to my earlier article on installing Linux as a dual boot on a Windows XP machine, I had to uninstall everything today, reverting this to only a Windows machine. Sad day.

The problem was that the computer had a nasty habit of just turning off in the middle of doing something, whether my wife and I were using Windows or Linux. I did a bit of research and found out the problem: my hard drive was not a normal hard drive, but one that utilized something nasty called FakeRAID to string together multiple hard drives into one. It works fine in Windows, but "It is not advisable to install Ubuntu onto disks managed by a fake raid system; it is extremely difficult and the results will be disappointing compared to Linux's LVM and md software raid system" (Article; also, more information on Ubuntu with FakeRAID).

At this point, I am over my head and unable to continue on this machine. I think that I am just going to find an old, cheap computer that I can gut and use for Linux.
